Swedish electric performance car brand Polestar, owned by Volvo Cars, has recently unveiled its newest model – the Polestar 3 electric SUV. As Polestar’s first SUV, the Polestar 3 aims to bring a new level of premium electric mobility to the market with its combination of style, technology, performance and sustainability.
The Polestar 3 features a distinctive exterior design that stands out in the SUV segment. It has a sporty, aerodynamic shape with a sloping roofline reminiscent of a coupe. At 4.9 meters long and 1.96 meters wide, it has imposing road presence, while the lowered roofline of just 1.6 meters helps improve the airflow and range.
Signature Polestar design elements include the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, minimalist branding, and flush door handles that automatically extend as you approach with the key. The front ‘SmartZone’ houses various sensors and cameras for driver assistance features, while aerodynamic wings on the front, sides and rear help direct airflow for stability and efficiency.
The Polestar 3 is available in 6 exterior colors – Snow, Magnesium, Jupiter, Midnight, Thunder and Space. It rides on unique 21 or 22 inch alloy wheel designs featuring intricate diamond-cut, 3D laser etched details.
The interior of the Polestar 3 focuses on sustainable luxury and seamless technology integration. Premium materials like animal-welfare certified wool blend fabric and Nappa leather provide a sensory experience, while the panoramic glass roof and ambient lighting add to the airy, spacious feel.
The centerpiece is a 14.5-inch touchscreen display powered by an NVIDIA processor and running Android Automotive OS. This powers the infotainment, navigation and connected services. Below it sits a wireless phone charger, gear selector and drive mode buttons in an uncluttered layout. Natural voice control also allows hands-free operation.
Heated, ventilated power front seats with memory function ensure comfort for all journeys. The rear seats accommodate 3 passengers with ample legroom and headroom. Cabin storage includes a front ‘frunk’ under the hood, door pockets, under-seat storage and a power rear cargo space of 491 liters expandable to 1411 liters.
Dual Motor, All-Wheel Drive Powertrain
The Polestar 3 features an advanced electric all-wheel drive powertrain with two electric motors, one on each axle. The standard Long range Dual motor model produces 360kW (489hp) and 840Nm of torque for a 0-100km/h time of 5 seconds. The Performance Pack version ups the output to 380kW (517hp) and 910Nm for quicker 4.7 second 0-100km/h sprints.
The 111 kWh battery enables a generous WLTP range of 610km on a single charge for the Long range version. With support for up to 250kW DC fast charging, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80% in just 30 minutes – ideal for long journeys. 11kW AC charging from a home wallbox will take around 11 hours from 0 to 100%.
Chassis, Suspension and Handling
The Polestar 3 is underpinned by Volvo’s SPA2 platform designed exclusively for electric vehicles. The aluminum intensive construction keeps weight low while maintaining rigidity. Active air suspension, dual wishbone front and integral link rear suspension provide a supple ride quality with sporty agility when needed.
For even sharper dynamics, the Performance Pack adds Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes, and torque vectoring. This allows fine-tuning of the suspension stiffness, while the ability to finely control the torque delivery between the front and rear wheels allows sharper turn-in and corner exit traction. Assisted steering calibration also adds more weight and feedback for an engaging driving experience.
Cutting Edge Safety
As expected from a Volvo brand, the Polestar 3 is brimming with both active and passive safety technologies. Surround view cameras and radar sensors enable advanced driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping aid, collision avoidance and more. These can help avoid accidents in the first place or minimize impact severity.
Inside, occupants are protected by a robust passenger safety cell, up to 9 airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, whiplash protection and more. Post-crash systems like automatic emergency calling add peace of mind. Standard safety also extends to protection against theft, extreme weather, and natural disasters with features like an inclination sensor and battery disconnect switch.
Sustainability and Ethics
With zero tailpipe emissions, the Polestar 3 supports sustainable mobility goals. But its focus on sustainability goes beyond this. The interior features extensive use of recycled materials like PET bottles, fishing nets and cork vinyl. Wood-based components are traced for ethical sourcing.
Animal welfare has also been considered – the Nappa leather is certified to respect animal rights during production. Such ethical and eco-conscious practices are part of Polestar’s vision to produce low-impact, responsible electric performance cars.
While the Polestar 3 is generously equipped as standard, a few option packages allow customers to tailor the vehicle to their needs. The Performance Pack brings the output up along with suspension and brake upgrades for sportier performance.
The Pilot pack adds LiDAR and more cameras to enable enhanced autonomous driving assistance. A heat pump can extend range in very cold conditions. Additional driver assistance features, 21-inch wheels, metallic paint, and upgraded Bowers & Wilkins audio are stand-alone options to consider.
Service and Support
As an electric vehicle, the Polestar 3 requires less routine maintenance than an internal combustion car. Scheduled maintenance is required only every 2 years or 30,000 km. Over-the-air software updates will keep things up to date automatically when connected to WiFi. Polestar provides 24/7 roadside assistance for the first 3 years.
The Polestar 3 is protected by a comprehensive warranty package: 2 years/unlimited mileage general warranty, 8 years/160,000 km battery warranty, and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty give complete peace of mind. The Polestar network of service points across Europe also ensures support is never far away.
Pricing and Availability
The Polestar 3 starts at €95,900 in Europe for the standard Long range Dual motor version, going up to €114,000 with all options added. First deliveries to customers are expected to begin in early 2023.
With its combination of electric power, cutting edge tech, environmental values, Scandinavian minimalist luxury and driver engagement, the Polestar 3 brings a unique take on premium electric mobility. Initial reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and it is sure to find many fans among eco-conscious driving enthusiasts looking for their next electric vehicle.
